USEFUL FOR

Aids in the classification of lymphomas and multiple myeloma

CLINICAL INFORMATION

The immunoglobulin molecules (antibodies) function as surface receptors for antigens for B lymphocytes and as secretory products of plasma cells forming the humoral arm of the immune system. IgD represents one of the immunoglobulin heavy chain types. Immunoreactivity is a specific marker for B lymphocytes and plasma cells; it is expressed normally on mantle zone lymphocytes. Diagnostically, staining for immunoglobulin heavy chains can aid in the diagnosis and classification of small B cell malignant lymphomas and multiple myeloma.

Intervening factors:

Age of a cut paraffin section can affect immunoreactivity. Stability thresholds vary widely among published literature and are antigen dependent. Best practice is for paraffin sections to be cut within 6 weeks.

Cases of non-acceptance of samples:

Wet/frozen tissue
Cytology smears
Nonformalin fixed tissue
Nonparaffin embedded tissue
